UCSB cycling came home with 4 podium finishes from the races this weekend at UC Santa Cruz. Pictured below is Bryce Trigiani, who won the Men’s B criterium at UC Santa Cruz this Sunday. The photo was taken by teammate Austin Grego, who called it, “proof that solo breakaways don’t always fail”. Congrats Bryce!
Meanwhile, one of our hot-shot new women’s riders, Jessica Baumgardner, took 3rd in the women’s B’s criterium (below, photo credit WCCC):
Not pictured: New member Dominik Cinka placed 3rd in the Men’s B’s road race, while returning member Gustavo Esquivel placed 2nd in the men’s C’s criterium.
Congrats to all of our fantastic riders who raced this weekend!!!

Congrats to our riders Jimmy Lucchesi, Nik Benko, and Garrett McGurk for making it to Collegiate Mountain Nationals in North Carolina this October!! Results and photos have been posted on the site:
On Friday, the guys drove all the way out to Reno, NV, to race fellow collegiate athletes in gravity and endurance events. The guys did great, and results have been posted on our results page! A big thanks to our sponsor, Clif, for supplying great food for all the races so far this season. Enjoy the race recap written by Garrett McGurk, and photos posted below!
Our mountain bikers travelled to Fresno this past weekend for their first race of the year! A race recap by Garrett McGurk can be found here. Results have been posted on the results page. Below are some photos taken by Coach Cody of the short track event!
Today the team raced the Valley of the Flowers out in Lompoc. The weather was much more pleasant for racing than yesterday, although the wind picked up a bit more – this made the odd “figure-eight” shaped, very technical, course even more of a challenge for all the contestants. Once again, Chris Rea snagged first place in Men’s Cat 4′s! He had the help of his teammates, Armando, Terry, Richard, and Abel in his win. Armando and Chris both won primes today, scoring a pair of Giant wheels and $40 in cash. We were all stoked to race this awesome weekend in our own backyard, and hope to visit it again next year! Results for both days have been posted under our ‘results’ page.
Eight of us cruised up to Buellton today for the Avenue of the Flags criterium, our first official summer race as a team! It was boiling hot today, with winds picking up in the afternoon. The course was a rolling L-shaped course with a downhill finish, circling the shady 805 beer garden (which a few of us of legal age took advantage of while watching the races). In spite of his injuries, our Men’s Road Captain Chris Rea raced amazingly well today, taking first place in Cat 4!! We look forward to tomorrow’s race in Lompoc, and shaking out the last few cobwebs that set in during finals week.
The season has come to an end, and what a season it has been! UCSB Cycling finished 5th in the overall standings of the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference, out of 25 teams. We are also proud to be sending three (very talented) riders, John Herr, Bobby Lozoya, and Stephen Murphy to Collegiate Nationals in Ogden, Utah! We have ended our season with positive results, and we look forward to racing this summer as well as training for next season.
