UCSB Cycling is a coed student organization of UCSB Recreational Sports. Our club is composed of recreational and competitive college students. Everyone is welcome to participate, as no experience is required! We compete in a number of cycling disciplines—focusing on mountain and road—and a wide variety of levels, from collegiate A-D’s to non-collegiate categories 1-5. Our team is part of the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference, a division of USA Cycling. We take part in two competitive collegiate seasons. The Mountain season takes place during fall quarter and the Road season takes place during winter and spring quarters. Everyone is welcome to join the team and go on our group rides as long as you wear a helmet and follow general bike etiquette.
+ HOW TO JOIN?
The best way to join the club is to get in touch with one of the officers by e-mail or to join either the google group or the group me and come to one of the posted rides. You can also attend one of our weekly team meetings, which are usually held on Tuesdays at 8:00pm in Girvetz Hall Room 1115 (double check the group me or google doc first). You may join the club at any point during the year, but we recommend joining earlier as that is when the club meetings and rides are more focused on newcomers.
+ DO I NEED ANY PRIOR EXPERIENCE?
No! We accept riders and racers of all levels. At the beginning of the school year, our coach and officers lead various “no drop” rides, which are geared towards beginner riders. No matter how slow you go, you won’t be left behind!
+ WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE A BIKE?
We have mountain and road bikes available for rent. There is no rental rate for members of the team who have paid team dues. However you are responsible for damages and the bikes are rented out on a first-come-first-serve basis. If there is high demand, we reserve the right to take back the bikes whenever we want if the renter is not taking proper care of it and/or riding regularly. If you do decide to join the team and purchase a new bike, you will have access to great deals on complete bikes through our generous sponsors, Varsity Bike Shop and KHS.
+ HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO JOIN?
Club membership costs $80 and entitles you to certain benefits such as discounts at Varsity Bike Shop, our local bike shop. There are also additional fees to join either the mountain or road race team. Please contact us, or come to a team meeting in order to find out more about this.
+ WHO CAN JOIN THE CLUB?
Alumni, graduate students, and undergrads are all welcome to join the club. Members of the community are invited to come ride with us at any time! Collegiate races are restricted to full-time students only; however, there are also non-collegiate races throughout the year that we can help you prepare for.
+ CAN I JOIN JUST THE CLUB AND STILL RACE?
Yes. However, we advise the race-team membership if you would like to race. Your dues quickly pay for themselves when you consider all expenses needed for a race weekend.
+ WHEN DOES THE TEAM RIDE? ARE THERE REQUIRED PRACTICES?
Although there are no mandatory practices and set schedule for rides, we organize group rides, skills clinics, and coach-led rides on a very frequent basis. Rides are primarily organized through our group me and there is usually at least one posted ride each day, giving you multiple options of when and what type of ride to attend.
+ I AM NEW TO THE AREA. WHERE DO I RIDE?
Check out our club Strava page to see where our members ride. The best way to find your way around is to go with someone who knows—join our GroupMe to learn about rides, meetings, and upcoming events. You can also ask local bike shops about group rides nearby.
+ IS THERE A COACH?
We are excited to announce that Soren Molina is coaching the team pro bono for the 2018-19 season. Soren will lead team rides, skills clinic, and help out with our crit practices amongst other things. If you want to learn more about him checkout: https://www.galaxycycling.com/about/#bio

+ WHAT IF I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS?
